The eight of us were pacing pretty easy into the Indian Res. The res is a strange place, there just shitty roads, poverty everywhere, and apparently drunk drivers according to the lady that stopped her car and flagged us down to let us know. Things are going smoothly when a res-dog starts to chase us, talk about a reason to bust out into a sprint. You don’t realize how much of a desert Arizona is until you have ridden a bicycle through it.

We stared to ride in a single file pace-line because it was way more efficient. Pacing like that was so much fun because the group was just hauling ass, it also passes time so much more quickly. We averaged 18mph there and was doing 20+ on the way back because of the tailwinds. I strategically ran my bike without a computer because I didn’t want the mileage to psych me out/ I didn’t want to be distracted.

Eventually we reached a crossroad in the middle of nowhere, luckily for us everyone was armed smartphones. Stopping to read the maps, we decided that our best option was to ride down this dirt road that ran parallel to some cotton fields instead of turning back down the road we came on (which we ended up having to do anyways). This whole little detour added about 10 miles to our total journey; I 100% blame apple maps for being inferior to Google maps in every way.

Detours and pit stops aside, we eventually reached Tucson, which is much nicer to ride a bicycle through than I expected. We went straight for the nearest Chipotle, where everyone replenished the 4,000 plus calories that we burned on the ride there. Got to our buddies place and neglected our plans to go out because we were all just completely wiped. A friend asked how I was feeling and I replied with, “like I just rode 130 miles”.

After sleeping on the floor of my buddies place in Tucson, I was regretting the decision to bike to Tucson. I reluctantly got kitted up once more, and headed out on the freezing streets of Tucson. We all met up and began on our journey back home. Damn we were hauling ass on the way back because of the strong tailwinds. We were probably averaging 20+ without even trying, and if the roads cooperated-the area we were traveling has notoriously terrible roads. Everyone was smiling and feeling good. The pace line we were doing got us home in no time. This was one of the single greatest accomplishments that I have ever done. The satisfaction of reaching home, taking off my cycling shoes, and jumping into a hot shower after riding 250 miles was priceless. I’ll be looking forward to the next one! Who’s down to ride to Cali next?

Throwing together a small yet fun alley cat style race for my birthday this year. Figured I’d get my friends together to do some of my favorite things: Riding bikes, having fun and drinking beers. If you’re in AZ try and make it out, should be a fucking blast.
